VCL Encore's debut company of 13–18 year olds will take part in NT Connections – the National Theatre's prestigious nationwide youth theatre festival, celebrating new writing for young performers.

Each year, theatre companies across the UK are selected to perform one of ten newly commissioned plays, before showcasing their work at a leading regional theatre. VCL Encore is delighted to be part of this programme, with performances taking place at Royal & Derngate, Northampton.

For our inaugural season, we have shortlisted two outstanding contemporary plays and will be assigned one of them by the National Theatre.

The Carnegie 10

When a group of young people refuse to leave their local Carnegie Library after it is earmarked for closure, an extraordinary occupation begins. Each character arrives with their own story, ambitions and reasons for staying – from aspiring writers and librarians to activists, influencers and young people searching for a place to belong. As friendships form and tensions rise, the library becomes a symbol of community, hope and the importance of being heard.

Wildfire

A fast-moving wildfire tears through a rural village, leaving a group of teenagers to face the aftermath together. Told through a dynamic ensemble, Wildfire explores loss, resilience and the strength of young people in the face of the climate crisis. Honest, thought-provoking and ultimately hopeful, it is a powerful piece of contemporary theatre that gives every performer an important voice.

DIRECTED BY ALISTAIR LLOYD MCCALLA

The production will be directed by Alistair Lloyd McCalla, an experienced theatre director and producer with an extensive background in developing young performers and creating ambitious youth theatre productions. With a strong focus on truthful storytelling, ensemble performance and actor development, rehearsals will challenge performers to explore contemporary theatre, deepen their performance skills and work to a professional standard.

Whichever play is assigned, participants will experience the full process of bringing a brand-new script to life—from first read-through and character exploration to rehearsals and performance on the stage of the Royal & Derngate.

This is an exceptional opportunity for young actors to work on contemporary theatre, collaborate with like-minded performers, and become part of a nationally recognised celebration of youth theatre.

PARTICIPATION FEES

We believe high-quality youth theatre training should be accessible.

NT Connections project fee is £5 per hour across the 25 2-hour sessions
